Week 8: Cloud Tech

Cloud technologies are an amazing source of inspiration, great media, and a potentially excellent way to network and get one’s art out there. I find them to be one of the most innovative and groundbreaking effects of the Web 2.0 trend and has the potential to be a very powerful force in the internet. I image integration of google documents into every webpage so the web browser is essentially a computer inside your computer. I wonder if someday, hard disks will be completely replaced by storage on a server of some type.

Cs135W Week 7 Blog [Photo Sharing]

It’s pretty cool how many choices people have for sharing photos online. With services ranging from flickr to photobucket to imageshack there is bound to be something there for somebody. I personally think it’s pretty cool that people are able to share their photos and graphic artwork so easily in rather good looking portfolios.

CS135W Week 6 Blog: Social Tagging

While I’m not completely familiar with Delicious, StumbleUpon has been a service I’ve been using for many years. It has helped me find a ton of really awesome media from pictures to videos to music. It has also helped me a lot with find abstract sources for assignments. Especially a few years ago StumbleUpon was like the Underground version of Google and contained so much stuff that Google doesn’t. In recent years due to growth and popularity StumbleUpon doesn’t seem to have as many “gems” to StumbleUpon on it as most of the stuff on there now is sourced from Google Anyway. From a musicians perspective, I’ve added several of my music pages to StumbleUpon and haven’t really received any traffic from it. Definitely not anymore than I would have without it. StumbleUpon is a great tool for Anybody but is especially awesome for entertainment purposes.

CIS135W Week 5 Blog: Twitter

I’ve had my Twitter account for a while but I’ve never really used it much. I find it more useful to follow people and see what’s up in their reality than using it to post. I’ve tried using it to promote my music but It didn’t really work out as well as Facebook or Soundcloud does. Maybe I just needed to put more effort into it. As I said though, I do enjoy following my favourite producers, manufacturers, actors and whatever else I want all in one place. It’s kinda micronews for me I guess.

CS135 Week 4 Blog [Vlogging]

This assignment made me realize that I’m not too much for social commentary. When asked to make a vlog, I wondered what I would talk about. I was thinking of perhaps doing a tutorial on how to use Ableton or some type of voice over commentary on some game play. I ended up deciding to fall back on stuff that I know how to do and editing a quick video clip in After Effects then applying a soundtrack to it in Ableton live. As I learn more about Adobe’s software I’m sure my skill will increase but for now this is what I’m working with.

I’m amazed by the possibilities and potential of some of the software contained in CS5+. I’m curious what i’ll be able to do in the future using these tools.

Facebook as a Tool for marketing (Class)

As a musician, Facebook has helped provide an excellent internet platform for promoting and distributing my music. With Facebook, I am able to send out my tracks that are in the form of embedded media using Soundcloud. This way, people can listen to the audio without leaving the page. They are also able to leave comments at timed positions which are represented along a horizontal timeline. If I have an upcoming gig, I am not only able to promote myself that way but the entire event is able to promote itself and become viral by means of sharing.

Thoughts About Wiki Assignment *Class

This assignment has been pretty informative on how to work that particular wiki site. While I already know much of the information being provided, it’s nice to have a comprehensive place to go with everything listed. I enjoyed having to find stuff to write about rather than being given a topic, it was more interesting that way. Wiki websites deserve more credit than they get…dang trolls.

Social Networking:

While the advent of Social Networking into the eye of the mainstream can be seen as a process that has been occurring since before the hay-day of Yahoo and then MySpace, it is in recent years that we can see a stronger than ever emergence of these services into everyday life, the entertainment industry, business, media and much more. In the modern era we can see websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr being advertised and used to promote everywhere from smashing top ten Hollywood movies to stickers and decals on businesses and vehicles. This huge emergence has made the owner’s of websites like this millionaires in some cases, as can be seen with the owner of Facebook.
Personally, I think this coming-out so to speak has been a mixed blessing for many of the people who enjoy these services. When seen in positive light, we can see benefits such as the ability for musicians, artists and businesses to self promote their art forms and services. This can be huge for some people as there are many musicians who are extremely popular right now largely due to websites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. On the darker side of things, many children and teens now spend the majority of their time using social networking sites rather than interacting with their peers in real life. This could potentially help fuel the obesity and anti-social problems we have this country as well as issues with predators searching the Internet for victims.
It’s hard to say rather or not these services are more-so beneficial or harmful. I’m sure most young adults would agree that the pros out-weight the cons when it comes to most social networking services. I tend to lean more towards the acceptance side as I have had great experiences utilizing social networking to expand my network and promote my music and art.

When it comes to other aspects of Web 2.0 Technologies I am much less skeptical. Blogging and Pod-casting are great way for beginner writers and radio geeks to get out into the industry. They also allow many people to write more freely and expressively than they’re used to. This regimented and open writing style known as blogging is great for expressing one’s feelings and thoughts. I’m curious to see what Web 3.0 or a similar upgrade to the social aspects of the Internet brings us. I can see a social networking site popping up that’s a lot like Skype allowing huge group video and audio conferences and such.
